Parent Zone

We value working closely with parents and carers, in order to provide the best possible opportunities for our pupils. Here are just some of the ways that we do this:

Home-School Agreement

At St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School we believe that the most important factor in promoting a child's success in education is the parents' attitude towards education.

When your child starts school you will be invited to sign a Home-School Agreement.   The agreement contains the school’s mission statement and the schools aims.   It clearly sets out what the school expects of its parents and what parents should expect from their child’s first school.   You will be asked to renew this agreement at the beginning of each school year.

By signing the Home-School Agreement you will be showing your commitment to working in partnership to ensure that your child achieves his or her very best.

Parent Forum

The parent forum, known in this school as Parent Voice, is a group of parent representatives who meet to discuss school-related issues.

Regular, open communication and consultation with parents is really important to the school.   Parent Voice provides a valuable way to listen to your ideas and concerns and seek your views, helping to make sure the needs of children and their families are met.  Meetings are led by school staff, usually by the Head Teacher and Family Support Worker, and are informal and a genuine opportunity for open discussion.

Letters Home

Many letters are sent home to parents. The school also produces a weekly “What’s On Diary” which contains important news and information.  Please make every effort to read them and respond promptly when required.

Copies of most of the documents that are sent home will also be available on the school website for you to download as a pdf document. However, not all letters will be put on the website as some are specific to a smaller group of pupils.

If you believe you should have received a letter and haven't or you would like another copy please call into the school and collect one.

Text to Parents

We send regular text messages with reminders and short messages regarding changes to events and clubs.

If you are not receiving these messages, please ensure you contact the office with your up to date mobile number.

Reports

Class teachers comment on and assess children’s work and individual progress in written reports, which are given to parents and carers once a year.  These reports help assess achievement, academic learning and social development, and each report is followed by the opportunity for a parent/carer consultation with class teachers.

Parent Consultations

All parents are invited to attend Parents’ Consultation meetings to discuss their child’s progress twice a year.   Parents are welcome to come outside of these times to discuss the education of their children. To ensure adequate time is given to discuss any concerns, it is helpful if an appointment is made with the child’s class teacher.

Masses, Assemblies and other Celebrations

We invite parents and other family members to join us in celebrating Mass and to attend assemblies and other celebrations and events on a number of occasions throughout the school year.

Family Support

Our school has a Family Support Worker whose role is to help ensure that all children and their families have the necessary support to help the children to achieve their potential at school and within the community. This includes monitoring attendance, working with parents and working alongside the school chaplain to provide pastoral support.

The Family Support Worker provides a welcoming environment for children and families, having particular regard for those who do not engage with schools.   She can be contacted through the school.

Our Family Support Worker also organises classes for parents in conjunction with the Adult Learning Team. Classes have included cookery, first aid, basic literacy and numeracy and computer studies.
