Pupil Premium

What is the Pupil Premium Grant?

The Pupil Premium Grant is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England; it is designed to help schools raise the attainment of disadvantaged children from Reception to Year 11 and close the gap between them and their peers.

Who should benefit from the Pupil Premium Grant?

Pupil Premium funding is allocated according to the number of children in each school, from Reception to Year Six, who:

 · Are entitled to Free School Meals

 · Have been entitled to Free School Meals during the last six years (this category is referred to as ‘Ever 6’)

 · Are ‘looked after’ children

 · Are adopted from care under the Adoption and Children Act 2002 and who have left care under a Special     Guardianship or Residence Order

 · Have parents in the regular armed forces, or who have been in the armed forces in the last four years

The Government provides a list of children who have been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years; this gives some information with regards to children who are entitled to Pupil Premium funding. The Headteacher from the Local Authority’s Virtual School for ‘Looked After’ Children works to identify children who are deemed ‘looked after’ across the County and s/he informs the schools that these children attend.

At St Mary’s:

  • We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils.
  • We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed
  • In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged
  • We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.
  • Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals, and will be reviewed annually in the summer term as well as regularly reviewed at School Committee meetings throughout the year
